At the age of forty, I set myself a simple challenge: to be healthier as I aged, instead of the other way around. It started out easily enough but got progressively more difficult over time. The main problem? With every year that passes, the body ages at an increasingly faster pace, which meant I had to start to learn a lot more about ways to slow down this destructive process. Everything was going smoothly until a motorcycle accident in 2018 forced me to leave my career and put my life on hold. This time away from work along with the isolation of the Covid pandemic gave me the time needed to work on more in depth self-healing techniques. He developed twelve ways to do this, now known as the twelve spokes.

John R. MacPhail spent twenty-five years in the business world, beginning at a Toronto investment firm, and has always had a passion for reading, learning, and teaching. MacPhail has a business degree, is a certified yoga and yin yoga teacher, a squash coach, a competitive squash player, has a black belt in taekwondo, and has trained in meditation. He teaches yoga a few times per week at a yoga studio, the YMCA and an addiction recovery facility, teaches squash to adults and kids, and hosts yoga retreats.
